What is a lounge sofa?

A lounge sofa is instantly recognizable. With its characteristic curvaceous look and opulent, comfortable shapes, the club sofa is a classic of English gentlemen's clubs. In fact, the club sofa is not English in origin, as many people believe, but French. At its origins in the early 20ᵉ century, it was referred to as a "comfortable armchair", in contrast to the stylish sofas then in vogue, with straight backrests and less enveloping lines. Renamed the canapé club in the early 1920s, it was long a standard of the French and English colonial jet-set, which no doubt explains the confusion over its origins. Today, the armchair and club sofa are inseparable from the lounge spirit across the Channel. And while purists reserve the name club armchair/sofa exclusively for models with shell-shaped armrests and round backrests, there are many variations, such as the club chapeau de gendarme or club moustache, named for the shape of their backrests.
